Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Release
But, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
But some do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given physical binders of files that contained no new data.
