Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
